Assistance Program for the Owners of Residential Buildings Damaged by Pyrite

Pyrite is a mineral found in the broken stone used as fill under the concrete foundation slabs in house basements. It oxidizes in the presence of humidity and oxygen, causing the stone fills to swell and the foundation slabs to lift and crack. The resulting damage can be significant.

The Québec government has introduced the Assistance Program for the Owners of Residential Buildings Damaged by Pyrite to help building owners pay for corrective repair work. The Québec government covers 62.5% of the financial assistance, the Canadian government covers 25% and the municipalities are invited to contribute an amount of up to 12.5%. This program is coordinated by the Société d'habitation du Québec.
