Bio Products
Here are a few examples of Bio Products:
Neem Oil
Active ingredient : azadirachtine
- Influences the hormonal system, feeding activity, reproduction and flying ability of insects.
- Acts by paralysing the natural movement of the intestine causing the deterioration of the insects since they can neither empty their intestine nor eat.
- Acts as an insect growth regulator (IGR) preventing exoskeleton development and impeding the molting process.
- Controls all soft-bodied insects (aphids, mealybugs), scale insects, nematodes, mushrooms and bacteria.
Some commercially available products: Bioneem®, Ornazin®, Trilogy® and other neem containing products. Horticultural Oils
Active ingredients: Fatty acids
- React with the fatty acids of the insect body, interfere with its metabolism and act like a poison.
- Act by blocking the holes used by insects to draw oxygene from their environment.
- Asphyxiate and quickly suffocate the insect.
- Repulsive effect which discourages laying.
- Very low Toxicity for mammals (5000 mg/kg for rats).
- Dissipates itself by evaporation after application.
- Allows to bring harmful population to tolerable levels Repress aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, whiteflies, caterpillars, and other scale.
- insects in the gardens. Also useful against powdery mildew.
Some commercially available horticultural oils (e.g., Sunspray®, Scalecide®, Volck®).
Trounce
Active ingredients: Fatty acids and pyrethrin.
- Natural, organic bug killer containing fatty acids and pyrethrin
- Control aphids, whiteflies, bees, caterpillars and some beetles
- Quick & effective
- Contact product
Some available products: Safer's Trounce (potassium salt fatty acid 20%, pyrethrins 0.2%).
Pyrethrins (Pyrethrum)
Active ingredients : Pyrethrin (Cinerin I et II et Jasmolin I et II)
- Pyrethrins are natural insecticides produced by flowers of certain species of the chrysanthemum plant (Tanacetum).
- Pyrethrum is a botanical insecticide.
- Four different active substances: Cinerin I et II et Jasmolin I et II.
- Contact poisons, which quickly penetrate the nerve system of the insect. Minutes after application, the insect cannot move or fly away.
- Used mainly to fight lice, mosquitos, cockroaches, coleopters and the flies.
- Pyrethrins are extremely toxic for fish.
Insecticidal Soap
Active ingredients: Fatty acids with long non-saturated chain
- The fatty acids disrupt the structure and permeability of the insects' cell membranes. The cell contents are able to leak from the damaged cells, and the insect quickly dies.
- Insecticidal soap works best on soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies.
- The addition of horticulture oils can increase the effectiveness of soap for harder to kill insects.
- Insecticidal soaps work only on direct contact with the pests.
- There is no residual insecticidal activity once the soap spray has dried.
Some commercially available insecticidal soaps (Safer®, or M-Pede®).
Hot Pepper Wax
Active ingredients: wax and cayenne pepper extract.
- A biodegradable, non-chemical repellent made of food-grade ingredients.
- Product coats plants with an invisible barrier against insect and animal pests.
- The hot pepper repels the pest; the wax keeps it on the plants for two weeks or more.
- Effective against whiteflies, spider mites, cabbage loopers and other soft bodied insects.
- Will help keep aphids, spider mites, thrips, whitefly, lace bugs, leafhoppers, and many other pests away from your fruit and vegetable crops.
- Spray every surface of the plant, especially the undersides of leaves where insects hide.
BTK
Active ingredients: protein Spores and crystals
- Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (B.t.k.) is a naturally occurring, bacteria found in the soil.
- Caterpillars that eat B.t.k. on trees and shrubs die when the B.t.k. spores are activated in the insects' stomachs.
- Btk must be ingested to be toxic to the insects.
- The bacterium produces spores and protein crystals, which paralyse the digestive tract muscles.
- B.t.k. breaks up in the environnement after two days.
- Fights caterpillars, sphinx of tomato, and other insects.
Rotenone
- Extracted from the tropical vegetable roots (species Derris [ Malaysia] and species Lonhocarpus [ South America]).
- The product must be ingested by the targeted parasites t to be effective.
- Toxic for non-target insects, fish and pigs
Diatomaceous Earth
Active ingredients: Silicone dioxide (SiO 2)
- A non-toxic, safe substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life.
- Have an envelope made up of silicone dioxide (SiO2)
- The microscopically fine, sharp edges desiccate the insects' exoskeleton upon contact and the pests dehydrate and die within hours.
- Must come into contact with the parasites to be effective
- Spread in places where the insects feed or live
- Recommended to wear a mask and safety goggles for the dust
- Use against indoor and outdoor crawling insects, including cockroaches, ants, bedbugs, fleas, carpet beetles, centipedes, crickets, earwigs, grasshoppers, ticks, millipedes, scorpions, slugs, and silverfish.
Borax
Active ingredients: Boric acid
- Contains boron, an inorganic compound.
- Kill parasites which feed on it.
- Available in powder, crystal or liquid.
- Must be out of reach of children and pets.
- Persist in the environment for a long time.
Corn gluten
- Corn gluten is a powdery byproduct of the corn milling process.
- Corn gluten has a N-P-K ratio of 9-1-0, or 10% nitrogen by weight.
- Very effective for lawns and gardens as a plant food as well as a weed supressor.
- Acts as a natural "pre-emergent" - it inhibits seed germination by drying out a seed as soon as it cracks open to sprout.
Weeds controlled include: crabgrass, dandelions, smart weed, redroot pigweed, purslane, lambsquarters, foxtail, and barnyard grass.
Nematodes
- Working with their symbiotic bacteria, nematodes kill insects in 24-48 hr.
- Nematodes are lethal to many important insect pests, yet are safe for plants and animals.
- Parasitic nematodes are used on the lawns to fight the white worms.
- Must be handled carefully during their use on the lawn.
- The lifespan of the nematodes in the ground is 60 to 90 days.
- Fights the white worms, chinch bugs, citrus root weevils, bettles, chafers and sod webworm.
