Snow Removal

The snow from your driveway must be kept on your property and not ploughed onto the street. Accumulating the snow along the sides, rather than at the end of your driveway, will help to eliminate high banks and improve the visibility required to exit safely.

Please inform your snow removal contractor that it is prohibited to dump or throw snow upon any streets, sidewalks, fire hydrants, public places or private properties, according to the requirements of the nuisance by-law 418. Those who contravene these provisions are liable to fines of $100 minimum.

To keep our roads safe, while minimizing the impact on the environment, the policy is to:

  • Maintain bare pavement on major arteries.
  • Use melting agents (salt) on roads with significant inclines to keep surfaces bare.
  • Leave a snow base on streets with light traffic, using abrasives (sand) when required.

Consult By-Law - Snow Removal.

Water Network

Maintenance of water network
Flushing of the water network is scheduled from mid-April to mid-June. This may temporarily alter the appearance of your running water. If your water is dirty or discoloured (reddish or yellow), let your cold water run for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, after which time it should return to normal. If it does not, please contact Public Works at 428-4500.

Water shut-down to make repairs
If the City should need to shut off the water supply to make repairs to the system in your area, you will hear a first warning signal approximately 15 to 20 minutes beforehand, in order to allow you to make provision for water during the repairs. The warning signal will be repeated a second time when the water has been turned off.

In most circumstances, service will be interrupted for a period of three to five hours. Once service is restored, if your water is discoloured with a yellowish or reddish tinge, allow it to run a few minutes until it is clear.

Street Lights

If you notice that a street light is defective, please write down the number registered on the light pole or the nearest address where the street light is located, and contact Public Works at (514) 428-4500.

After notifying Public Works, the repair will be done in the following ten (10) days.

Property Markers

By-law BEAC-033 allows the use of property markers between May 1 and October 31. They must be placed on the grass, spaced 3 m apart and should be concrete white in colour, with a flat top (not pointed), no higher than 250 mm, no longer or wider than 200 mm at the base and not attached to the ground.

If you install snow markers to protect your roadside property, they must be at least 1.5 m high and be placed at least 1 m from the edge of the pavement.

Public Works will remove any posts not conforming to this standard.

Consult By-Law - Snow Removal.

Septic Tank Cleaning

Provincial regulations require cleaning of septic tanks once every two years. For residents who do not have access to the domestic sewer service, the City will assume the costs up to $175, plus taxes, for basic cleaning. Additional costs will be assumed by homeowner.
