On August 9, some buildings may have been damaged by heavy rains.
If the damage is significant, the city assessor (City of Montreal) may reduce the value of your building, and consequently the property tax that applies, until it is repaired. Such intervention, if necessary, affects the value of your building only temporarily.
If your building has suffered significant damage as a result of the August 9th event and you would like to have the impact of the damage on the value of your property examined, you can contact the Direction de l'évaluation foncière at (514) 280-3825 and ask to speak to the appraiser in your sector.
Note that if the fire department has found damage to your property, it has informed the assessor, who has already sent you a letter inquiring about the nature and extent of the damage. Warning: this letter may have given the impression that a permit to modify your building has been requested. If you have not requested a permit from the city, this letter concerns the August 9 event only.
If you have any questions on this subject, please do not hesitate to contact the Property Assessment Department at the City of Montreal.
